vibedasher vs Lightdash
Who Lightdash is for
Lightdash describes itself as "the AI-first, open-source BI platform" with the line "Build Intelligence, not just dashboards", and it is aimed at "modern data teams". Its workflow is explicit on the homepage: "Connect to dbt, define metrics once, and get instant, trustworthy insights." That sentence is the product. If your organisation has a dbt project that the analytics engineers maintain and care about, Lightdash turns it into a BI surface without you re-defining a single metric in a second tool — and that is a genuinely hard problem that most BI products solve badly or not at all. It is open source, it documents roles, permissions and row-level security, and it has an agents and MCP story of its own.

|---|---|---|
| Who writes the dashboard | Your coding agent, as React components over SQL. We host that tree as a static, client-rendered bundle — React only, with none of your server code in the request path and no npm install at build time, because the libraries come from a pinned list. | A person in Lightdash, over the metrics and dimensions your dbt project declares. The dbt model is the source of truth. |
| Hosting and governance | A URL behind your login, or an embed inside your product. Per-viewer row filters are the embed lane and only the embed lane — enforced server-side from a signed token. A dashboard you publish publicly is the other case: its credential-free data lane serves one Parquet extract per dataset and snapshot, so every visitor gets every row of it. | Roles, permissions and row-level security over the dbt model; they state the goal as people seeing all the data they need and nothing more. Check their docs for the embedding shapes. |
| MCP / agent control plane | An MCP server covering the whole loop: connect a source, push dashboard code, build, publish, schedule a refresh, eject. pip install vibedasher-mcp then vibedasher login. A refresh needs a dataset backed by a live connection — an uploaded file cannot be scheduled — and every cron is read in UTC. | MCP is documented in their agents section and they position the product as AI-first. Check their docs for the current tool list. |
| Eject-to-code | Yes. React source in your repo, still querying our API. A real ejected dashboard runs on this site. | Not applicable: the dashboard is a definition over the dbt model, and the dbt project is already yours in git. |
| Self-host | docker compose for one host, a Helm chart for Kubernetes, the same engine as the managed cloud. No production customer yet. | Self-hosting is part of the open-source offer; check their docs for the supported deployment shapes. |
| Managed cloud region | Data plane in the European Union, Frankfurt. Sign-in identity — email address and account membership — is held in the United States for every account; there is no region selector. The self-hosted build keeps both in your network. | Lightdash Cloud — check their docs for regions. |
| Connectors | Warehouses, databases and SaaS sources, plus CSV and Excel upload. The count is on pricing; the full list, including what is not available yet, is in the documentation. | The warehouses dbt targets, which is the point of the architecture — see their documentation. |
| Licence | Proprietary, with a self-host option. | As of 2026-10-06, their licence file says: MIT, with a separate enterprise licence for one directory. |
| Pricing model | See /pricing. | See their pricing page. |
Choose Lightdash if
- You already run dbt and the metric definitions in it are the thing you do not want duplicated.
- Analytics engineers own the semantic layer and analysts consume it — that division of labour is the one Lightdash was designed around.
- You want one governed definition of revenue, not one per dashboard.
- Open source with a readable MIT core matters to your procurement.
Choose vibedasher if
- There is no dbt project, or there is one and the dashboards you need are not expressible as charts over it.
- The dashboard is being written by a coding agent as React, and you need hosting for that artifact rather than a place to re-specify it.
- It is going in front of your own paying customers as an embed, where per-viewer row filters are enforced server-side from a signed token rather than chosen in the client.
- You want the dashboard back as source whenever you ask: eject-to-code.

Perguntas frequentes
- Do I need dbt to use vibedasher?
- No. We read warehouses, databases and flat-file uploads directly, and your agent writes SQL against them. If you do run dbt we can read what it produced, but nothing here assumes it. Lightdash is the opposite by design: dbt is the modelling layer it is built on, which is a strength if you already have one.
- Does Lightdash give the metric consistency vibedasher does not?
- On that axis, yes, and it is worth being plain about. Lightdash positions itself around defining metrics once in dbt and getting consistent answers everywhere. vibedasher has no semantic layer of its own: a metric is the SQL your agent wrote, reviewable in your repository, and nothing stops two dashboards computing revenue two ways. If one governed definition is the problem you have, that is a real reason to pick them.
- Can Lightdash host a React dashboard my agent wrote?
- No, and neither tool claims to do the other's job. Lightdash renders charts and dashboards from its own definitions over the dbt model. vibedasher hosts the component tree your agent emitted, which is why eject-to-code is possible here and not meaningful there.
- What is each licensed under?
- Checked on 2026-10-06, from the licence file in their public repository. Lightdash publishes its code under the MIT licence, with a separate enterprise licence for one directory in the repository, per the licence file in their public repo. vibedasher is proprietary, with a self-host option. Check their docs before relying on either.
- Can an agent drive Lightdash?
- Lightdash describes itself as an AI-first open-source BI platform and documents MCP in its agents section, so yes, to some extent — check their docs for exactly which tools are exposed today, because this is the part of every product in this category that moves fastest. What we would not claim is that it ships a dashboard from a terminal the way ours does.
