vibedasher vs Metabase
Who Metabase is for
Metabase positions itself as "analytics your team will use and trust", for two readers: a company that wants self-service analytics across non-technical teams, and a SaaS company embedding analytics in its product. It is open source and self-hostable with a documented Docker path, it ships a visual query builder alongside a SQL editor and a plain-English query feature, it offers a governed semantic layer for data teams who want canonical tables and metrics, and it documents an official MCP server so an AI client can work against your instance. It is the most widely deployed open-source BI tool there is, and if a colleague who does not write code needs to answer their own question next Tuesday, Metabase is a better answer than we are.

| vibedasher | Metabase | |
|---|---|---|
| Who writes the dashboard | Your coding agent, as React components over SQL. We host that tree as a static, client-rendered bundle — React only, with none of your server code in the request path and no npm install at build time, because the libraries come from a pinned list. | A person in Metabase: the visual query builder, the SQL editor, or plain English via its AI feature. An agent can drive it over MCP, producing Metabase objects. |
| Hosting and governance | A URL behind your login, or an embed inside your product. Per-viewer row filters are the embed lane and only the embed lane — enforced server-side from a signed token. A dashboard you publish publicly is the other case: its credential-free data lane serves one Parquet extract per dataset and snapshot, so every visitor gets every row of it. | Hosted by you or by Metabase Cloud, with permissions, sandboxing and an Embedded Analytics SDK for multi-tenant embeds. See their docs for the editions each needs. |
| MCP / agent control plane | An MCP server covering the whole loop: connect a source, push dashboard code, build, publish, schedule a refresh, eject. pip install vibedasher-mcp then vibedasher login. A refresh needs a dataset backed by a live connection — an uploaded file cannot be scheduled — and every cron is read in UTC. | An official MCP server at your instance endpoint, OAuth-authenticated, tools scoped to the connecting person's permissions — query construction and execution, and creating questions and dashboards. |
| Eject-to-code | Yes. The dashboard comes back as React source in your repo and keeps using our query API. There is a real ejected dashboard on this site. | Not applicable in the same sense — there is no component tree to hand back. Serialisation exports the Metabase objects for version control. |
| Self-host | docker compose for one host, a Helm chart for Kubernetes. Same engine as the managed cloud. No production customer yet. | Yes, and it is the product's heritage. Docker is the documented and recommended route; check their docs for Kubernetes. |
| Managed cloud region | Data plane in the European Union, Frankfurt. Sign-in identity — email address and account membership — is held in the United States for every account; there is no region selector. The self-hosted build keeps both in your network. | Metabase Cloud — check their docs for regions. |
| Connectors | Warehouses, databases and SaaS sources, plus CSV and Excel upload. The count is on pricing; the full list, including what is not available yet, is in the documentation. | A broad set of SQL databases and warehouses — see their documentation. |
| Licence | Proprietary, with a self-host option. | As of 2026-10-06, their licence file says: AGPL outside the enterprise directory; Metabase Commercial License inside it. |
| Pricing model | See /pricing. | See their pricing page. |
Choose Metabase if
- Non-technical people need to build and modify their own dashboards without an engineer in the loop.
- You want the most mature open-source option and a large community answering questions before you ask them.
- Governance over a shared internal analytics estate — collections, permissions, a curated semantic layer — is the problem you are solving.
- You want an AGPL core you can read, fork and run with no vendor relationship at all.
Choose vibedasher if
- The dashboard is already being written by Claude Code, Codex, Cursor or Gemini, and you need somewhere to put React and SQL rather than something to re-author it in.
- It is going in front of your own paying customers as an embed, where per-viewer row filters are enforced server-side from a signed token rather than chosen in the client.
- You want the exit in writing: eject-to-code hands the dashboard back as source, because the artifact was code the whole time.
- Your constraint is European data residency or your own network, and you would rather read one plain paragraph about it than a trust-centre page.

Frequently asked questions
- Can Metabase host a dashboard my coding agent wrote in React?
- Not as React. Metabase hosts questions, dashboards and models authored in its own model, and its Embedded Analytics SDK embeds those objects into your application. An agent can drive Metabase — it has an official MCP server — but what the agent produces there is a Metabase object, not a component tree you own. vibedasher hosts the component tree.
- Metabase already has an MCP server. What does yours add?
- A different scope. Metabase documents an MCP server at its own endpoint, authenticated with OAuth and scoped to the permissions of the person connecting, with tools to construct and execute queries and to create questions and dashboards. Ours drives the whole delivery loop instead: connect a data source, push dashboard code, build it, publish it, schedule a refresh, and eject the source back out. Both are real; they are aimed at different jobs.
- Which is easier for a non-technical colleague?
- Metabase, clearly, and we would rather say so here than have you discover it. It has a visual query builder, a plain-English query feature and a governed semantic layer for exactly that reader. vibedasher has no canvas: creating a dashboard means running a coding agent. Reading one needs nothing but the link.
- What is each licensed under?
- Checked on 2026-10-06, from the licence file in their public repository. Metabase publishes its source under the GNU Affero General Public License outside its enterprise directory, and under the Metabase Commercial License inside it, per its own licence file. vibedasher is proprietary, with a self-host option. Neither is a reason to choose on its own, but it is the row most often guessed at, so it is stated rather than implied.
- Could I run both?
- Plenty of teams should. Metabase for internal self-service analytics that analysts and operators drive themselves, vibedasher for the customer-facing dashboards your agent writes and your product embeds. They read the same warehouse and neither owns the other's artifact.
